Running an ecommerce business from Bali: payments, sourcing, shipping and visas (2026)
For Shopify, Amazon and DTC operators running an ecommerce business from Bali: what the visas allow, why payments depend on your business's country, sourcing and exporting from Indonesia without a local company, shipping, duties and product content. Checked 26 October 2026.
Key takeaways
- Payment providers look at where your business is, not where your laptop is. Shopify Payments covers 41 countries and Indonesia isn't one; Stripe lists Indonesia as a preview market (both checked 26 Oct 2026).
- Stripe's own help page says the people associated with an account must live in a supported country, so a foreign company alone may not settle it if you live in Bali. Check before you build your checkout around Stripe.
- Indonesia's C2 business visit visa explicitly allows buying goods and inspecting goods at factories and production sites, but bans selling goods or services or taking payment in Indonesia.
- To export cargo from Indonesia you need an NIB business number with export customs access. Foreigners can't use the PT Perorangan route Indonesians use, so without a PT PMA you export through your supplier or a registered forwarder.
- The US ended duty-free de minimis entry for all countries on 29 August 2025, so orders shipped from Bali to US customers no longer enter duty-free, whatever their value.
- Plan production around March 2027: Nyepi is on 8 March and Idul Fitri on 10 and 11 March, with collective leave days on 9, 12 and 15 March.
Running an ecommerce business from Bali: payments, sourcing, shipping and visas
You can run an ecommerce business from Bali when the store's business is registered abroad, because Shopify Payments and Stripe start from where the business is registered, not where you sit (though Stripe also checks where the people behind the account live). The Bali-specific parts are your visa, which limits selling in Indonesia, and Indonesian export rules, which need a registered exporter, so without a local company you export through your supplier or a forwarder. Get those two right and the rest is ordinary ecommerce.
This page is for Shopify, Amazon and DTC operators. It isn't legal, tax or immigration advice: read our visa guide and tax guide, then check your own case with a lawyer.
What your visa allows when the store is registered abroad
From imigrasi's own pages, checked 26 Oct 2026:
| Visa | Useful for | What it rules out |
|---|---|---|
| E33G remote worker | Staying up to a year "to carry out tasks from a foreign company". Needs an employment agreement with a company established outside Indonesia and income of at least US$60,000 a year. Rp7,000,000 for a one-year stay | Working in a way that doesn't match the permit, and selling goods or services "unless needed in their work" |
| C2 business visit | Business, meetings and "purchasing goods", plus inspecting goods at offices, factories or production sites. 60 days, extendable to 180 in total. Rp2,000,000 | Selling goods or services, or taking payment from people or companies in Indonesia |
The grey area. Running a foreign store means selling goods, but to customers abroad, through a foreign company. Imigrasi's E33G page doesn't say how its "no selling goods or services" line applies to that, or whether an owner contracting with their own company counts as employed by it. Our visa guide describes the E33G as being for people "employed by, or running" a foreign company. We couldn't confirm the owner case on 26 Oct 2026, so take that exact question to an immigration lawyer.
Selling to Indonesian customers is a different business. That means a PT PMA, Indonesia's foreign-owned company, and our PT PMA playbook notes that e-commerce retail activity codes carry restrictions. Check current rules with your setup agent.

Payments: start with the business's country
| Provider | What it says decides eligibility | Indonesia (checked 26 Oct 2026) |
|---|---|---|
| Shopify Payments | You can use it "if your business is located in one of the supported countries" | Not on the list of 41. Shopify says to use a third-party provider instead |
| Stripe | Supported country or region of the business | Listed as "Preview", with a contact-sales link instead of signup |
Where it gets awkward: Stripe's help page on Estonian e-residency companies says the people associated with an account must live in a supported country (Stripe support, checked 26 Oct 2026). That page is about Estonian companies, and on 26 Oct 2026 we couldn't find a Stripe page saying whether the same applies to any company whose owner lives in Bali. So a foreign company on its own may not settle it. The same page suggests Stripe Atlas, a US company, for people in unsupported countries.
Shopify's account setup page also rules out PO box and private mailbox addresses for Shopify Payments (Shopify Help, checked 26 Oct 2026), so a mail-forwarding address isn't a shortcut.
The general options are covered by Remote Builders:
- Stripe not available in my country
- Merchant of record vs Stripe. That guide notes most merchants of record only take software and digital products, so they rarely fit a physical-goods store.
- Business accounts for remote founders and US LLC for non-US founders
Amazon seller accounts from abroad
Amazon's seller signup page lists what you need: government-issued ID, an email address, an internationally chargeable credit card, a bank account and routing number, a business licence or registration, proof of residential address from the last 180 days, and tax information (sell.amazon.com, checked 26 Oct 2026). Its global selling page says businesses outside the US "may not be required to form a US company" to sell on Amazon.com (Amazon Global Selling, checked 26 Oct 2026).
Two things to watch from Bali:
- The 180-day address proof. Amazon asks for recent proof of your residential address. Keep your ID, address proof, business registration and bank details consistent; we couldn't find Amazon public guidance on owners who live in a different country from their business.
- Payouts. Amazon's Currency Converter for Sellers page says it pays out in "20+ payout currencies" and doesn't list Indonesia (Amazon, checked 26 Oct 2026). Amazon's country lists for registration and disbursement sit behind Seller Central login, so we couldn't confirm Indonesia's status on 26 Oct 2026.
Sourcing in Bali and Indonesia
If you're making crafts, homewares, fashion or swimwear, the C2 visa is the one written for sourcing trips: buying goods and inspecting them at factories and production sites are both on imigrasi's list. Practical habits that save a season:
- Write the spec down. Materials, sizes, colours, tolerances, packaging and labels, with photos. Get a signed-off sample and keep one in Bali.
- Check production in person before the balance is paid, or pay someone you trust to.
- Plan around holidays. Nyepi 2027 is Monday 8 March and Idul Fitri is 10 and 11 March, with collective leave days on 9, 12 and 15 March (Setneg, checked 26 Oct 2026). Expect March 2027 production and freight to slow.
How exporting works without a local company
This is the part people get wrong. Indonesia's customs rules expect a registered exporter.
- Exporters need an NIB with export customs access. Bea Cukai calls the NIB the main requirement for would-be exporters and says registered business entities can export, with individuals using a PT Perorangan (Bea Cukai Lampung, 17 Sep 2024, checked 26 Oct 2026). A customs official set out the same steps in 2023: register an NIB on OSS, then register with customs (DDTCNews, 11 Aug 2023, checked 26 Oct 2026).
- PT Perorangan is for Indonesian citizens. Article 6(1) of Government Regulation 8 of 2021 requires the founder to be an Indonesian citizen (Hukumonline, checked 26 Oct 2026).
So, as a foreigner without a PT PMA, your realistic routes are:
| Route | Who is the exporter | Fits |
|---|---|---|
| Supplier exports | Your Indonesian supplier, in its own name | Regular orders from one maker |
| Freight forwarder or export agent | A registered company files the export declaration (PEB) | Consolidating several suppliers into one shipment |
| Post or courier parcels | Under Bea Cukai's parcel rules, the sender is the exporter and the postal operator handles customs. Parcels up to 30 kg can go on a CN customs form | Samples and low volumes |
| Your own PT PMA | Your Indonesian company | Ongoing volume, local staff or Indonesian sales |
The parcel rules come from Bea Cukai's export parcels FAQ, checked 26 Oct 2026. It doesn't mention foreign senders, so we couldn't confirm how it treats a foreigner shipping commercial volumes this way. Ask your forwarder to confirm they're registered with customs before you hand over goods.
Wooden products may need extra paperwork. The sources we found on 26 Oct 2026 conflicted on whether timber legality documents are still required for furniture and crafts, so get your forwarder to confirm for your exact product.
Shipping and fulfilment
Two models, and you can run both:
- Ship each order from Bali. No stock abroad and easy to test new products. But every parcel goes through customs at the destination, and transit is longer. Pos Indonesia lists EMS, Pos Ekspor and e-Packet with a rate calculator on its site (checked 26 Oct 2026); check rates there before you price shipping.
- Ship in bulk to a 3PL in your customer market. One export and one import entry per shipment, then local delivery times your customers expect. You pay for storage and need enough volume to make a pallet worth it.
The US change makes the second model more attractive for American customers: US Customs and Border Protection ended duty-free de minimis treatment for goods from all countries from 29 August 2025, so low-value parcels now pay applicable duties and taxes (CBP, checked 26 Oct 2026).
Customs and duties at the destination
Rates depend on your product's commodity code and change often, so use the destination's own tools rather than a blog's numbers:
- United Kingdom: the UK Integrated Online Tariff finds commodity codes, duty and VAT (checked 26 Oct 2026).
- European Union: Access2Markets, My Trade Assistant shows conditions and rules of origin by product (checked 26 Oct 2026).
- United States: start with CBP and remember the de minimis change above.
- Australia: the Australian Border Force's cost of importing pages at abf.gov.au. We couldn't load them on 26 Oct 2026, so we haven't quoted thresholds.
Product photography and content in Bali
You're surrounded by good light and backdrops, which is a real advantage for lifestyle shots. A few things make the content usable:
- Shoot for your customer's world, not Bali's. Tropical backdrops suit swimwear and resort wear. They can look off-brand for products sold into a northern winter.
- Get written releases from every model and from property owners for locations, stating where you'll use the images.
- Keep a plain-background set for marketplace listings, and check each marketplace's image rules before the shoot.
- Respect ceremonies and temples. Ask before you shoot anywhere sacred, and don't stage products there.
- Keep your samples. Reshoots are cheaper when the products are still here.

Frequently asked questions
Can I run a Shopify store from Bali?
Yes, if the store's business is registered in a country Shopify Payments supports, or you use a third-party payment provider. Shopify's list of 41 supported countries doesn't include Indonesia. Your visa is the other half: check what it allows before you start trading from here.
Can I use Stripe while living in Bali?
Stripe lists Indonesia as a preview market, so you can't simply open an Indonesian account. Stripe's help page on Estonian companies says the people associated with an account must live in a supported country, so a foreign company may not be enough. Confirm your exact setup with Stripe.
Can I sell on Amazon from Bali?
Amazon's seller signup asks for government ID, an internationally chargeable credit card, a bank account, a business licence or registration, proof of residential address from the last 180 days and tax information. Amazon's public pages didn't show on 26 October 2026 whether Indonesia is accepted for registration or payouts, so check in Seller Central.
Can a foreigner export products from Indonesia without a company?
Not as the exporter of record for cargo. Exporters need an NIB with export customs access, individuals export through a PT Perorangan, and that structure is for Indonesian citizens. Without a PT PMA, a foreign operator can have the supplier export in its own name or use a registered forwarder.
Is it cheaper to ship from Bali or use a 3PL?
It depends on order volume and where your customers are. Shipping each order from Bali avoids holding stock abroad but adds transit time and destination duties per parcel. Bulk shipping to a 3PL in your customer market means one customs entry and faster local delivery, but you pay for storage.
